Towards Ladram Bay

Original Watercolour painting

Mount size to fit a standard frame 9" x 7"
Painting size 6" x 4"

'Towards Ladram Bay' was inspired by one of my regular visits to Jacob's Ladder Beach in Sidmouth, Devon... It's a stunning location and is part of the Jurassic coastline with dramatic steep cliffs and rock formations at low tide, perfect for rock pooling. My favourite place to be is on the beach, it's my 'happy place' and I'm often found walking along the water's edge and just taking in all the sensory delights of fresh sea air and the sights and sounds of the surroundings. This particular beach is one of Sidmouth's two large beaches and has an expanse of sand at low tide and shingle along the cliff edge.

I particularly love the view towards Ladram Bay with its dramatic rock formations and at this time of day the backlit cliffs contrasted beautifully with the warm glow of the sky...I love painting 'contre jour' (against the light) it's an interesting challenge to paint things in shadow and yet still tease out the myriad of colours still lurking before the final light fades.

I have also shown my sketchbooks and preparatory work in the artist's studio' section for this painting as I would like to give you a glimpse of what goes into each painting and the process involved...the outdoor sketching, the interpretation of what motivated me to paint, the tonal values, composition and also the colours that best represent the mood and visual impact that I aim to convey...

I have used the finest quality Saunders Waterford 100% cotton rag paper and professional artists watercolour pigments.
